Sirius Satellite Radio
The other day I was home with nothing to do. I turned on our Sirius Satellite Radio out of boredom and began flipping through the stations. While doing so, I came upon a couple radio stations that only spoke French. Being a French major here at Slippery Rock University, this interested me. I was surprised how much I could understand. There was a radio announcer who spoke the language and played songs all day in French. I think that this could be a useful tool in a classroom setting. For example, if there are a few minutes before class lets out and the students have nothing to do, playing the French radio station from Sirius radio could be an activity. Have the students see how much they can understand from a short clip of narration or song. Sirius radio is completely commercial-free and therefore you would not have to worry about interuptions. As stated above, there were several French-speaking stations (one with love songs, one with pop music, and two sports stations). As a teacher, you could pick which station would be the most appropriate for the students to listen to. Not only would be this be a useful tool for a foreign language class, but Sirius radio offers over 150 channels. It includes everything from music, to sports, to talk shows, to history discussions. The Sirius radio mount also allows you to plug in your iPod or mp3 player, and would also be useful in a classroom for those other items. Therefore, I feel this could be a useful tool in a classroom that I had never thought about before!

I am a big fan of Sirius Satellite Radio. Besides the fact that it literally gets me through work everyday ,it does have a lot of useful tools that could also be educational. With stations like CNN and other international stations it really gives a good worldly perspective to students here in the USA. I'm also a big fan of Maxim radio. Haha, thats really not for the classroom however.
That is a good idea! I know in my little brother's spanish class they listened to Shakira and he loved it!
Historychannel...Maxim is my favorite station too!
I listened to the History Channel via Sirius today and I found it actually interesting and entertaining, contrary to my initial thought. The channel provided different biases on current events such as the "War on Terror", or as one spokes person called it "The War of Terror". It gave the facts of the conflict along with different perspectives for the listener to consider when drawing their own conclusion on the situation. Thanks for the idea, because I would have never thought to look there for information with any significance or value.
I think that Sirius Satellite Radio would be a great tool to use in the classroom. Especially from what you said how there are french stations. I took french in high school and can't remember that much, but I think that if our class would have been exposed more to actually listen to people speak french more I would have learned and remembered it better. So, I think this would be a good way to have the students learn better.
Being a language major like yourself, I think this would be a great tool to use in the classroom. I've never used Sirius Satellite Radio before because I didn't know they had other channels besides music. I'll definitely be looking into this soon!
